The Short Answer

What Happens Between Mumbai and Manama

Bahraini employers hire Indian workers because India supplies trained tradespeople at scale, many with working English and Gulf experience. Before those workers land in Bahrain, five things happen in India: a practical trade test, a medical at a Wafid-approved centre, certificate attestation where the role needs it, emigration clearance where the passport requires it, and a pre-departure briefing.

Your side of the journey is short: send your requirement, choose your workers, sign a clear contract and apply for the work permit in Bahrain. Manpower First handles everything that happens in India. For Bahrain's own rules, including the 21-day approval window, see our employer's planning guide for Bahrain.

It is a route with a long history. Nearly 330,000 Indian nationals live in Bahrain, according to India's Ambassador to Bahrain, working on building sites and in factories, hotels, hospitals and banks. The two countries signed a labour agreement in June 2009, and 2026 marks 55 years of diplomatic relations between them.

Why India

Why Bahraini Employers Hire Indian Workers

Four reasons come up again and again when Bahraini employers explain why they hire from India.

Trained trades

India has over 13,000 Industrial Training Institutes, with 1.47 million trainees enrolled in 2025 to 2026, reported by All India Radio. Electricians, welders, fitters and machine operators arrive with formal training behind them.

English at work

Many candidates speak working English, the everyday language on many Bahraini sites, and you can check it yourself at interview before you choose anyone.

Gulf experience

Many candidates have already worked in the Gulf, so the climate, the working week and life abroad are not new to them. They settle in faster.

A community already there

With hundreds of thousands of Indians already in Bahrain, new workers arrive to familiar food, languages and support networks, which helps them stay for the full contract.

Jobs in Demand

The Roles Bahrain Needs Most, and Where India Fits

Bahrain's foreign workforce is concentrated in trade, construction and hospitality, with 118,666 foreign workers in construction alone, according to Bahrain's Labour and Legal Affairs Minister. Beyond oil, financial services and manufacturing are the largest parts of the economy, at 19.7% and 14.6% of output in the first quarter of 2026 (official figures reported by Trading Economics). Here is how India's workforce matches those needs.

In India

What Happens in India Before Your Workers Fly

While you apply for the work permit in Bahrain, a lot happens in India. Every candidate is trade-tested before you see them. Selected workers complete a medical examination at a Wafid-approved centre. For professional roles, degrees and experience certificates are checked and attested.

Once your work permit is approved, the entry visa is issued electronically. Workers who hold an Emigration Check Required passport then need emigration clearance, because Bahrain is one of the 18 countries notified by the Government of India. Finally, every worker receives a pre-departure briefing on life and work in Bahrain before flying. Manpower First handles everything on the India side.

The one thing to get right: emigration clearance checks the salary, the contract terms, the employer's details and the worker's insurance. A clear, signed contract with salary, working hours and accommodation is the fastest route through it.

India's 2026 Skills Upgrade, and What It Means for Your Hiring

India is rebuilding the training system that produces its tradespeople. Under PM-SETU (Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded Industrial Training Institutes), 850 government institutes have been chosen for upgrading, organised as 172 hubs and 678 linked institutes. The scheme completed its first year on 4 October 2026 and is now moving to a nationwide rollout across 200 clusters, reported by All India Radio.

Its aims are industry-led management, upgraded training facilities and courses built around what employers actually need, backed by more than 600 billion rupees from India's central government, its states and industry. Enrolment in Industrial Training Institutes has already grown 54%, from 951,000 trainees in 2014 to 2015 to 1.47 million in 2025 to 2026.

What is changing in India

  • Industry helps run institutes and shape courses
  • Upgraded training facilities across 200 clusters
  • Courses designed around current workforce demand
  • More trainees every year, now 1.47 million

What it means for Bahraini employers

  • Candidates trained closer to real site and factory work
  • A larger pool of trained trades for bulk hiring
  • Shortlists that are easier to fill for specialist roles
  • The same rule at Manpower First: every candidate is still trade-tested before you see them

Tested before you see them

Shortlisted candidates have already passed a practical trade test in India, so your interviews are about choosing the best fit, not finding out who can do the job.

Your contract, ready for clearance

Emigration clearance checks the salary and terms in your contract. We go through those details with you early, so nothing holds your workers back at the last step.

Under one month from your permit

Most Bahrain deployments complete in under one month from the work permit application, because the India side is finished while Bahrain's 21-day approval window runs.

Free replacement during probation

If a worker is not right during the 3-month probation period, a replacement comes at our cost. The work permit for the new worker is applied for by the employer.
